Post Auction Deer Talk

Well that’s another year’s sale over and I have to say it was a bit of a disappointment this year on the day. The weather was against us for certain. Our property “suffered” from just over a metre of rainfall during November up to and including sale day. We never saw the sun for eight weeks prior to the sale! Consequently the prolific grass growth was merely standing green water with virtually no nutritional value and our 2 year old stock was slightly underdone on sale day. We realised that.

By contrast, the pictures of Lots 4 and 26 on the Post Sale Review page were taken just 4 days after the sale, and those of you who attended the sale will notice the rapid advance in antler development, compared to that evident at the sale. This was after one wet day and just 3 (partially) sunny days. It’s amazing what a bit of sun can do.

Such is life as a stud breeder, so we can only smile and pick ourselves up for the next round. Some things we can control and some we cannot. It was encouraging to see two or three of the studs have good strong sales - as the underlying markets for deer products are reasonably strong.

We are pleased that we eventually cleared all stock on offer (including all withdrawn Lots), except the two Lots shown in the pictures and one other that shows good promise. We will breed from these boys this autumn, then wheel them out to show off as three year olds (to look at rather than to sell I expect)

So our thanks to all who bought at our sale or attended on the day in the pouring rain.

We expect to have a small number of elite females for sale by private treaty this winter, so watch this space.

Here’s to a good roar and a new crop of super stock in 2013.
